Summer 2026
It was a proud summer figuring out how to live off grid on my little slice of Alaska!  While I didn't have an opportunity to make many improvements, I did figure out how to address all of the basics of life.  A very wet summer made solar power challenging, but part of the fun is adapting to the situation and learning to live more simply.  I hauled water from the local spring. I rented a porta potty for a bathroom.  My shower was a little pump in a bucket up to a shower head attached to a dead tree.  I dug a small low volume French drain for gray water.  And I settled into my camper and had a lot of fun learning to live small.  But, my favorite thing was simply relaxing in the camper or in my screen tent and looking out into the woods and imagining the possibilities.  An outdoor shower built from pallets?! Boardwalks through the woods!  A little cabin further back on the land amongst the trees!  My hope is to spend more time there next summer and hopefully, to host friends and share it with them as they visit and explore Alaska. Wesley's Walden
In September 2025 I purchased a small piece of land in Ninilchik, Alaska to build an off grid Alaskan oasis! The empty one acre plot is undeveloped with the exception of a gravel driveway and pad.  Over the coming years I'll be homesteading and building a place to live and host friends.  Right now I'm enjoying the process of imagining what it will eventually be and thinking through the logistics of it all.  My first step was the purchase of a camper in June 2026!  I'm looking forward to chronicling the process and sharing the successes, challenges, setbacks, and completed projects.  Ultimately, the only success that matters will be the memories shared with those I'm lucky enough to share it with.  --- Wes (July 2026)
